The 4 Essential Questions Every Renter Should Ask

1–What Capacity Do You Really Need?
A forklift’s capacity is the maximum weight it can safely lift. But there’s more to it than the number on the data plate:
- Capacity decreases the higher you lift
- Capacity decreases when you add attachments
- Using a too-small forklift risks product damage or operator injury
Before renting, know the weight and dimensions of your typical load—and choose a forklift with room to spare.

2–What’s the Load Center?
Most forklifts are rated using a 24-inch load center, assuming a perfectly balanced, cube-shaped load.
Real life rarely works that way.
If your load is:
- Long
- Heavy on one side
- Irregularly shaped
- Not centered on the forks
…its center of gravity shifts and your forklift’s safe lifting capacity drops.

3–How High Do You Need to Lift?
Lift height affects everything—from the forklift model to the safety rating to whether you can even fit through your warehouse doors.
Know the following:
- Your max lift height
- Any ceiling or doorway restrictions
- Whether a standard triple-stage mast (≈188–189″) is enough
- Whether you need a quad mast for heights of 240″+
- Your forklift’s collapsed height (completely lowered mast)
4–What’s Your Application?
Your “application” determines everything (What you’re doing + where you’re doing it.):
- What you’re lifting (pallets, carpet rolls, pipe, lumber, etc.)
- Where you’re operating (warehouse aisles, loading docks, gravel lots, construction sites, etc.)
Your answers dictate:
- Fuel type (electric, LPG, diesel)
- Tire type (cushion, solid pneumatic, air pneumatic)
- Attachments
- Required stability
- Equipment size and turning radius
Indoor warehouse? Cushion tire LPG might be right.
Outdoor yard? Pneumatic tires excel on uneven surfaces.
Tight aisles? A compact electric lift could be the safest solution.
